The latest news from the Amazon product forest is that Alexa, will now be able to make you panic and misdiagnose yourself with cancer.
AI Doctor In The House (Your House)
So if you haven’t already heard of her Alexa is Amazons answer to Siri and Cortana. She has many many features but up until now I don’t think the ability to convince someone that their common cold would require an amputated limb, was on that list.
WebMD has announced that it’s teamed up with Alexa-enabled devices to help answer basic health-related queries. In a world where people believed a SOFTWARE update made an older generation of the iPhone waterproof, I have little hope that this will end in anything other than disaster.
DON’T LISTEN TO IT THOUGH
OBVIOUSLY WebMD stresses that Alexa is only meant to offer supplementary information, saying that this is far from a finished product. If ever a sentence said “We know people do dumb shit so we’re covering our backs” this would be it.
Apparently there are currently a large number of bugs including the devices inability to understand what people who are choking are trying to say… I will stop the sarcasm at some point, honest… That aside reports are saying that it genuinely cant explain how to cure a headache, but if you’re asking that question you deserve the headache.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I love feeling like the future is right here and right now. This technology 100% gives me that exact feeling. Though I would happily place money on a bet stating that in the next six months somebody will almost DEFINITELY be trying to sue Amazon or WebMD for some ridiculous accident caused by medical advice received from Alexa.
My advice to you is that if you have any level of common sense you could find this application of Alexa really helpful, but If you’re the kind of person who still believes that if you say gullible really, really slowly it rhymes with orange you should probably avoid this… And the rest of the internet actually.
Will you be asking Alex your medical questions?
